Im passing the love from STEM For Kids on the state of NC schools overall. I will add to this my anecdotal observations of one elementary school without naming names. I saw a focus on the kids who were lagging to get them up to speed and, unfortunately, not paying proper due to the accelerated students who needed more rigor, challenge, and cerebral exercise. The way the system is set up, it is more important that more kids pass the EOGs than the average and gifted kids progress to higher levels. This excessive focus needs to change to account for the kids who dont need the extra help but would benefit from further instruction by getting them further along in the game. I want to add also that while focus on science, technology, engineering, and math is important, it is the classics that really provide our kids the insight into the legacy of the greatest minds to walk this planet. I am afraid we might be forgetting about the ideas of those that came before us in our focus on skill sets. We need our kids to be as intellectually flexible with the classical education of literature, history, and philosophy as we want them to be qualified to become the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.
