Im posting this on on my main page, because it drives me personally crazy: Im an immigrant to the USA, who has lived here for most of my life. Everyone assumes Im American. In fact, the last time I went to an immigration office people from other countries twice tried to ask me questions assuming I worked there. Ive been asked to register to vote at the DMV and other locations more times than I can count, and on one occasion had to explain at length to a voter registration lady at the DMV why it would be wrong and illegal for her to register me to vote. Ive only voted ONCE in my entire 45 years, and that was in Fife, Scotland well over 20 years ago. My homeland, Britain, long ago nullified ex-pat votes (Labour figured we had a disturbing tendency to vote Tory) so I cant legally vote anywhere. So it drives me UP THE WALL to read studies like this one, and learn that a sizable number of people who have entered this country ILLEGALLY are voting in important federal elections that will affect me and my family for years. For instance, in 2008, Obama won my state by 14,177 votes, which was well within the illegal vote margin the study revealed. So can you do me a great favor Americans? Require ID and proof of citizenship to vote in your elections! Almost every other country on earth, including Mexico, already does that. And btw, Ive worked with the homeless and poor for years here in Fayetteville, and have yet to encounter an American citizen without ID. BTW - this is from the WaPo and refers to a study done in the International Journal of Electoral Studies, not a right wing blog. Its happening. Its not right. Do something about it.
