Im probably going to get some flack, but its in the spirit of teaching/helping beginners. Ive been seeing a lot of shaping lately that is just rounding over or softening corners of every piece on a project - and thats it. Intarsia and segmentation can be so much more when you spend a little extra time and truly shape a project rather than do what amounts to taking a router and easing all the edges. Think of your project three dimensionally - look at photos of subject matter from different angles. A dogs nose sticks out farther than its eyes, a horse face has contours and musculature, rocks arent flat - they have indents and grooves. Feathers have shape - and not all feathers are exactly the same as the next. Markings on animals such as spots and stripes are the exact same thickness and depth of the rest of the animal - they should be shaped together as a unit. A fish with different colors is still smooth and flat - not bubble shaped where the coloring changes. Think of these things and what they would look like in real life - then shape accordingly. Dont be afraid to get down and dirty and make some real dimensional projects! Sorry if I offend anyone - I figure some people are here to learn, so rather than just like every photo, I feel that people might benefit more by some constructive criticism. Everyone learns from each piece they create. Always strive to make your next piece better than the piece you just finished. Look at your finished pieces and see what you could do next time you make it to improve upon it.
