Im putting together a set of guidelines for communicating online and want some thoughts on what you think. Heres the first draft Roberts Rules of Internet Order - Facebook/Google/AIM or other chat service - if you dont want to chat, turn off your chat in Facebook or other platform, or reply within 5 minutes if you are on chat. - LinkedIn messages - respond within 24 hours during the week and by Monday if on the weekend - Text messages - if you have a prior text message history with the person texting you, respond within 12 hours if it isnt urgent, within a day. - Invitations - invite people to events or meetings personally. This means invite them via Facebook event invite, phone call or text message. A no reply doesnt mean no, so respond accordingly. If you dont wish to be invited to events in a certain way, make it known to the inviter. Choose the most personal method possible to invite others to your events. - Phone calls - use phone without notice only as a way to clarify and confirm appointments. Plan longer calls ahead by using a service like meetme.so Keep unplanned calls to three minutes or less - Email - email is forever, so only use it as a clarifying tool or to create a permanent record. Respond to all emails from human beings during 4 specific times a day. Use auto responders where appropriate. - Group Discussions/Meetings - face to face meetings except for funerals, weddings, networking events or meals dont need to be held unless every other method of meeting has been exhausted. Use a tool like Basecamp or Google Hangout to conduct meetings and maintain records of discussions to avoid time conflicts. If you need to have a meeting, use a service like bubbl.us to find a convenient time and have a clear agenda that allows you to finish early.
