Im scared to shared this because when I say gifted many people hear smarter/better than your kid....which is certainly NOT the case. I have kids that think differently, thats it. Both Mattias and Mika meet the parameters for being labelled gifted, not profoundly, but gifted just the same. In reality its a misnomer because its simply an expression of neurodiversity. These kids are often diagnosed for no reason other than we dont know where to slot them. It also comes with possible negative behaviours, habits, insecurities including anxiety and depression. Then there is asynchronous development. How do we handle kids like Mattias who is extremely intelligent but writes at a low grade 4 level? Or Mika who is 2 years ahead scholastically but behind socially with anxiety and obsessive tendencies? Its so much more than oh everyone thinks their kid is smart or if hes so smart why does his behaviour suck? Its the way these kids are built...there is good and bad but certainly not better. We need to find ways to support all learners because who knows where their potential can really fly???
