Im seeing a lot of people this morning commenting negatively on the million mask march events happening, and saying that theres no reason for people to wear the masks, as protest is still legal. It would be a lovely world IF you could protest in the UK without fear of repercussion, but unfortunately you cant anymore. Peaceful protest is being outlawed slowly but effectively, and the treatment of those choosing to do so is getting increasingly worse... look at the footage thats come out of the fracking protests. Look at the number of people arrested at recent protests that judges have had to throw out of court due to them being totally unnecessary. I agree Im not a great fan of the masked marches as they do draw a ridiculous amount of idiots... but then again so do football matches. 15 arrests is not good, but looking at the amount of people who took part, Im guessing that its actually lower than your average premiership football match aftermath... no one wants to ban that (ok some do, but you dont see the fictional drivel the BBC label news calling for it). The fact of the matter is if the government criminalizes protest (and any idiot that looks at recent handling and legislation can see they are), then yes some people will remove themselves from the protest movement... others will draw the conclusion they might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb... and somewhere in the carnage that follows the real message gets lost, until some exasperated soul resorts to gunpowder, treason, and plot.
