Im serious this is actually really bothering me, especially because Im a non American musician that is always being labelled as a jazz composer (although my composition is itself a doubtful thing at best), but as a person, where humanity is just a state and art a conduit, it feels ridiculous that someone high up is stating these kind of sentiments. I dont think racism or nationalism is healed by racism or nationalism. As stated in the previous post I am not an African American or a white or other American so cant relate to their struggles completely if at all, but I do have a problem with cultural ownership. Some Croatian instruments derive from Armenian ones, some derive from Irani ones, some derive from Mongolian ones, some tonal systems derive from Germanic ones... you get my point... should we give it up ? the same goes for blues and jazz, it has many origins, and yes its african american, but then it becomes a basis for something else, and then times change, and our human variation doesnt really have any cultural significance anymore I hope. We create our own personal expression from what we can naturally pick up around us, who our friends are. Why does an Australian singer (from Hiatus Kaiyote) sound like a gospel singer ? Its global culture, everything is everyone. articles.latimes/2013/apr/27/entertainment/la-et-ms-nicholas-payton-jazz-bam-20130428
