Im sharing this post from AFSP because it does raise many good points about how the media can responsibly report on suicide, but unfortunately - even within this very article, they have mentioned location and method - something that should not be done. I also very much dislike referring to the suicidal person as a jumper, its dehumanizing I feel to describe a person as their method. Heres a direct quote from an excellent resource about why location and method should not be mentioned: Details of the method or the location a suicide victim uses may lead to copycat suicides. So in coverage of a suicide at an urban university, a reporter’s specific information about the victim diving to her death out of an apartment window just sensationalizes the incident. A reporter should not risk providing another person considering suicide with the details of how it can be achieved. (poynter.org/uncate.../18183/reporting-on-suicide/). Shared via American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: We would like to commend the Hudson Star Observer in Hudson, WI for writing this thoughtful piece about responsibly reporting on suicide. AFSP often works with reporters on safe and responsible reporting and we are happy to see that this newspaper is thinking so carefully about the issue. The editor of the paper told us that some staff members attended an AFSP sponsored training for journalists a few years ago. He said: since then it has always been a priority of our staff to treat deaths by suicide in a fair, respectful manner. Not that we always succeed, but it is front and center on our radar screen. We just thought it was time to talk about the subject with our readers. You can read the thoughtful editorial at the link below: #mediacoverageofsuicide #suicide #suicideprevention #mediaguidelines
