Im sitting on my couch, checking out facebook, and listening to the furnace blow air through my house. Although I cant hear it, theres another fan blowing in my house -- its my active radon mitigation system. This fan sucks all the gases -- including radioactive radon gas -- from below my basement slab before these gases enter the basement where my kids watch tv and play air hockey. The fan forces the radon gas outside, where its harmless. Without this fan, my kids would be subject to breathing in this gas, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer. I learned I needed a radon fan when I had my home tested, and the results were above 4.0 pico curies per liter. I needed this fan even though I had a passive radon system that had been installed when my house was built. Unless these passive systems are built correctly, they do not work. January is National Radon Action Month -- take advantage and get your home tested.
