Im so Hoboken I can remember the time when Hoboken had no movie theater, the Fabian had closed, we had no bowling alleys, both Adams Lanes and Empire Lanes had closed, so what was left for the kids to do. Well another true story from the annals of the 1130 Willow Ave mob, Vinny Munno, Danny McMaster, and of course yours trully Jim McMaster (alias Buddy). This had to have happened in the middle 60s, we took the trail across the railroad tracks near 10th street on our way up to Jersey City, I think we were headed toward North St park. We got to the top of the hill across the street from the park, there was a large vacant lot on the top of the hill at the time which is now an apartment building. There were always trucks and trailers parked there, sometimes when the carnival was at North St park, they would park all their equipment there. Well we were at the top of the hill as stated earlier and we saw this huge truck spare tire, it was not attached to a rim thank God, anyway the three of were barely able to stand this tire on end to attempt to see if we could roll it down the hill. We really didnt think it would make the journey down the hill plus we didnt think it could jump the two sets of railroad tracks at the bottom. Well low and behold that tire must have been going 50+ miles an hour down the hill as it hit the railroad tracks, jumped both sets and goes into a parking lot of some factory and smashes into some car. The three of us are now in shock standing at the top of the hill, people are now coming out of the factory to see what had caused the noise, they see the tire and look up at top of the hill, everybody is pointing at us. We are still there as the Hoboken police show up at the factory, we are now terrified, we start running along the top of the hill towards the Viaduct, we can see the police tracking us along the bottom of the hill in their squad car. It was like a scene from a Keystone Cops movie, why we didnt just duck into North St. park until the heat was off Ill never know, we finally lost the cops up in the hills near Union City. I dont remember telling our parents about this, they would have hauled us off to jail. Im very thankful that we didnt hurt anybody that day, its just one of the adventures I thought Id share, I hope the statue of limitations has expired, I dont want some cop from Hoboken showing up at my door in Wyoming.
