Im so glad I dont have kids because I would be that one parent who would challenge some of these back to school lists... Example One: I know someone whose kid is in a class where each and every child is required to bring a 12 pack glue sticks...If there are 25 kids in that class thats 300 glue sticks...Now tell me, what do they need 300 glue sticks for? And thats a modest head count for a public school class...Im thinking theres at least another 5 kids, so thats another 60 glue sticks...What kind of arts and crafts projects are these little ones going to be making with that much glue? Those had better be the best macaroni art Mothers Day cards ever seen by mankind... Example Two: I know of another class that is requiring students to have a certain number of specific colors of notebooks and folders...Like this really makes a difference? Last time I checked, a notebook was a notebook and a folder was a folder...If it does the job, why should the color of it matter? Example Three: Ive seen lists where children are being asked to bring 60 No.2 pencils a piece...The children will keep 30 for their own use and the remaining thirty will be donated to the general classroom usage...There was also an added note that they will be expected to also bring an additional 60 new pencils at the start of the next semester as well, so it might behoove parents to buy additional pencils now while they are on sale...Now rolling on that model of 30 students per class, thats 3600 pencils in the course of an academic year...in just one classroom... Example Four: I actually saw one list posted a few weeks ago where the teacher also had required for them to bring other items for communal use such as chalk, dry erase markers, hand soap, wet wipes, paper towels and sanitizing sprays (specifically Clorox), etc...I get it, times are tough, but what kind of school districts cant provide basics like chalk? Its really nothing against the teacher for asking for it, but it just floors me that chalk was on that list, as well as many of the other items which to me are basics that should be paid for and provided by the school districts themselves...
