Im so sad to have lost my former English professor, Pat Skarda, yesterday. She shaped my intellectual life and those of so many other Smithies over her 40-year career. She was demanding, pugnacious, always opinionated, and never one to turn down an argument, a party, or a chance to dance on a table during class. Her former students are coming together in the wake of this sad news, and the strength of our affection for and memories of her are testament to the effect she had on us. As Margaret Edson said at our graduation in 08, teachers teach us because they love us. We love them too.
