Im so torn over this. I will admit that I ran to the defense of Adrian Peterson thinking that all he did was give his child a spanking. I was reminded that Adrian is the same person whose 2-year old son was killed by the boyfriend of the mother last year. I am torn because African-Americans learned discipline through discipline of slavery. Mothers and Fathers would continue to beat their children through a 100 years of Jim Crow out of fear of the fact that not showing absolute submissive respect could get you killed. The only way to teach submissive respect is in through fear and intimidation and that usually results in violence.. Parenting is a tool that is passed down from generation to generation, it takes a village to raise a child, so it is hard to break away from the villages way of doing things. It is extremely hard for a new African-American parent in which most likely their complete family history has had whoopings as a part of disciplining children to try something extent. It is a lot easier said than done and it would take tremendous strength, growth, development for their parent because they lack the whole plethora of skills necessary to pull off such a feat. In the day and age where good African-American fathers are trying to save their sons from the streets to keep them out of a system where over African-Americans make up only 14% of this nations population but represent over 50% of its prison population, fathers do not want to take their chances, so Adrian Peterson did what was did to him, he felt that it worked on him so he would do the same thing with his son. Even with knowing all of this, I saw the boy and he multiple lacerations all over his legs, was hit on his testicles with a switch by Adrians own admission and had leaves stuffed in his mouth by the boys admission and I find this completely unacceptable as the boy is only 4 years old. You can beat anything into submission but the psychological damage from when a punishment can turn to abuse can be severely damaging. But if it is the only tool in the tool box, then to most it far beats the alternative. I just cant imagine what a four year old could do to warrant such a hiding that a few licks across the buttocks with the hand could not have accomplished so for this reason I cannot side with Adrian and cannot fault anyone for reporting it. I hope that he does not lose his career and that he does not lose his parental rights.
