Im sorry, I apologize, its shameful, but I just read this review and Im overwhelmed. Author Massimo Marino has clearly not put character development on hold in between Once Humans and the previous book, Daimones. Both the characters and the world around them have undergone a literal evolution over the elapsed time between the two books, and it goes to show just how thoughtful Marino has been in crafting the universe of this trilogy. While this may not be another pop culture phenomenon with a confusing expanded universe, the world of Eridu and the history of the Moirai appears to be expansive enough that such a phenomenon would be easily possible. The story and characters are compelling enough that fans of movies, television, and comics might wonder if there are any plans for an adaptation of the series. In some ways, this gem of science fiction literature appears to be above that. This is in no small part due to the complexity of the themes presented regarding human nature, which make the themes in a thought-provoking series such as The Walking Dead seem almost trite. One of the most fantastic feats of this novel is that it appears the average reader could pick this up with no knowledge of the previous book and still enjoy it for what it is. With the seven-year time lapse and the immense amount of development on the world of Eridu in that time, this story reads as less of a post-apocalyptic adventure and more as an exploration of a burgeoning civilization still in its infancy. Rarely does a sequel shine so well both on its own and as part of an epic trilogy that any reader who’s made it this far will be itching to finish (yet secretly hoping that it never ends). - From Amazon US, for Once Humans
