Im sorry, but an extra hour for a kid who is struggling and doesnt want to be at school, will not help in my opinion. The extra hour will not be a time machine that magically takes the kid back to recover the foundational skills they missed due to parent neglect as a small child... The skills they missed in K or 1st when the teacher was pressured to pass them knowing the child wasnt ready...an extra hour will not stop the child from thinking about their best friend/family member who was shot and killed the week before... It wont help them focus more on school and less on raising their younger sibling while their parents or single parent is out running the streets of Duval....Duval County has a serious social problem thats the root of 41 failing schools. People are passing mandates that know nothing about education. We are cramming ridiculous amounts of irrelevant tests down the throats of kids who would much rather be on their social media accounts, then taking a 40 question test riddled with laughable errors. I know this bc Id rather be on mine than giving that test. This social problem isnt new. Generations ago children couldnt wait to get to school bc it was a safe haven and they loved learning. Teachers were not beaten down by administration and mandates and came in with fresh energy and the love that those kids so desperately needed. Those kids would have given a limb to stay an extra hour in a place they loved so much. Teachers now are forced.. (Ok I guess encouraged is a nicer word) to stay on a set pacing guide where everyone in the entire county is in the same place at the same time. One prescription and regimen for thousands of patients??? A doctor would be in malpractice court for years. I know we are supposed to differentiate for everyones needs, but tell that to the 2nd grade teacher who is dealing with a room of 18 seven year olds, of which half probably had cheetohs and Pepsi for breakfast -- and will have a downward spiraling junk food crash around 10 am. I could go on but you get my point. I guess I could have just posted that i dont think an extra hour will help and that wed be better off applying Caesar Milans advice for dog training -- Exercise, Discpline, Affection --- bc honestly -- its a social issue--I have a career, multiple college degrees, a support system and there are times that I worry/struggle, and its all I can think about a 32 year old.... Imagine how 80+% of our kids feel.....even for that extra hour....
