Im sorry, but this rant I just cant keep inside this morning. I pulled this paragraph directly from the Williamson Daily News website story about the election. The story is under a byline listing Rachel Dove and Cindy Browning as writers. The expired Commission term seen County Clerk “Big Jim” Hatfield winning over Incumbent Mike Carter with a 44.56 to 38.60 percent total. Dave Justice finished third with 16.84. SEEN!!! Seriously. Seen, as in the past tense of see? Not saw? That rumble you hear is the sound of Dutch Tolbert and Wally Warden turning in their graves. They set and lived up to a set of journalistic standards! I only have one friend remaining at the Daily News. Such is the fate when you are an old-timer. But I hope my friend Kyle Lovern will show this story to these two reporters this morning and I hope one or both of them is aghast that this came out under their byline. If they arent, perhaps he should talk to them about conjugating verbs, or at least introduce them to W.L. Bostic or June Glover. And then he can talk about standards that were in place under some of the former editors. If the reporters didnt use this word and it was inserted by an editor, that editor should be talked to sternly. Its one thing to use slang or make mistakes in speech or on a social media site like this. But when you are reporting for a newspaper, you carry an element of the public trust. Perhaps some people should remember that!
