Im sorry for this taking longer to post than I originally thought I would. This is my mom, the way I will always remember her. When these pictures were taken I we lived in Columbus, GA. The picture of all of us together was when my dad received his first purple heart from his first tour of duty in Viet Nam, he would eventually serve three. My mom was an officers wife and did a lot to help my dad become the awesome soldier he became. My mom was so talented. She had studied to become a piano teacher, and played the piano beautifully. She was one of the best artists I ever knew and I am so blessed to have many of her paintings she gave me throughout our lives. She did a mural on the wall of the Officers Club. She told me of how she drew out the picture and numbered it and had the other officers wives help her paint it. This was an amazing task that only took 5 days to complete. In the same year, I believe it was 1965, she also painted a portrait of Robert P. Patterson, Secretary of War. She received accommodations for that and her painting was placed in the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame. She was a gifted seamstress and taught me everything I know about sewing. She used to make her and I matching outfits like the ones in the picture of her with my brother, Gary and I. She made her suit she wore to my dads medal award. She was just amazing. She was an awesome cook and taught me a lot about cooking. She was a hard worker. While my dad was away at war we didnt have much money, but my brother and I never knew it. She took a job as a playground supervisor to help make ends meet. She later went to college. She studied at what was then known as Little Rock University, now UALR. She also studied at Rutgers University, where I believe she received her BS. At the same time she went to school full time she also worked full time and was a single parent, my mom and dad divorced when I was 16. She was a technical writer at Bell Labs in New Jersey until she had a tragic accident making her permanently disabled. She had problems with mental illness too. That all started when I was 9. Our life was a challenge because of that but she still managed to accomplish a lot. She did her best to provide for my brother and I and always had more love than anyone will ever know. She had the sweetest heart. She was gentle and kind. I have so many memories of wonderful times with her. She used to read us stories and in doing that she would take on the characters voices which brought the stories to life. She was a Christian. She took us to church when we were young and taught us about Jesus. I remember many times, she would take our little hands and we would go into the bedroom and get on our knees and she would pray. I saw many miracles from God answering those prayers. She was the best mom anyone could ever have. I will miss her terribly. But I have comfort in knowing she is no longer tormented in her mind. And she now has a healthy new body. I would like to thank all of the nurses and doctors at St. Vincents Hospital who helped my mom have as much dignity in her last days as they possibly could. I am thankful I was able to spend most of her last two weeks by her side, and I have my husband to thank for that. I love you mom, and I will see you soon.
