Im spending today enjoying this Christmas Day with Kathi, watching The Quiet Man on TV, and rereading the first book about Zen that I ever read, long, long ago . . . The Way of Zen. Our son Kirk and his girlfriend Lindsey came for Christmas eve last night. Kathi served her traditional clam chowder for supper. Really great chowder, but which I always over eat, and then have a bit of regret for my gluttony because of its richness. We exchanged presents, and then our son gave us the best present we could hope for . . . . He told us he got a job . . . a real, career track job, with real pay and benefits and, importantly, a career track. Doing aspects of his training and interests, and which requires his degree and level of education . . . and at what, IMO, hes quite good at. Hes been working at low level benefit-less jobs since he graduated, several years ago, just after the downturn. He and she now both have career track jobs and have a real household income between them. They can begin to pay off her student loans and put money away for things. They can plan . . . . So, you see, Kathi and I are very happy and grateful this Christmas. My thoughts drift back to when I was offered my position, now retired from, at the lab after finishing my degree during the recession of the early 80s. We then went on a two week vacation between my acceptance of its offer and my start date. During that two week escape period, we viewed the world through different eyes, both Kathi and I . . . . eyes that then saw hope, happiness and witnessed our gratitude . . . for our planning, persistent, belief . . . . and our luck. We were overjoyed then, as we are now. We both now witness life repeating itself, . . . . just with different players, at differing parts of the never ending play.
