Im staggered at how much support gets given to blues and blues-based rock by the music industry in South Africa...I went through my blues and rock period in my early 20s but the infectious rhythms and incredible music of my homeland won out. This felt more real to me than emulating American music with a fake American accent...besides, if youre a South African blues/rock player and you want to leave the country, there are a gazillion players out there who do it better than you and it is their own culture. So back home, youre sort of stuck in a tiny microcosm of endlessly rehashed blues/rock cliches and fooling yourself you have something unique...all whilst living in an African country surrounded by the most awe-inspiring musicians and composers who reflect their position on the continent in their work and are proud of it...
