Im starting to put some effort into my annual winter forecast for central Georgia. I was curious if what we experience in the summer months can offer some input into the following winter. The short answer is no. Ive examined data since 1900 for the Macon area. Above Avg. Summer followed by Above Avg. Winter: 30 times Above Avg. Summer followed by Below Avg. Winter: 27 times Below Avg. Summer followed by Above Avg. Winter: 30 times Below Avg. Summer followed by Below Avg. Winter: 27 times The only trend that comes out of that data - and its a stretch - is that our current climate in central Ga. favors an above average winter. Having said that, 3 of the last 5 winters in the Macon area have been below average. Summer 2014 was below average. Based on trends since 1900, that would favor an above average winter. Thats not my official forecast. Ill be examining other trends over the next month, but that data stood out as interesting to me. What do you think this winter will bring to central Georgia?
