Im still digesting a rich weekend at the Key West Literary Seminar, How The Light Gets In. What an extraordinary gathering! Writers having heartfelt, significant conversations with other writers, both on stage and over outdoor lunches (conch chowder!). One of many themes that emerged (and which inspires this weeks WRITING EXERCISE) was the significance in literature of the spirit of longing--from Pico Iyers quip, If you have a longing, satisfaction is likely to be a disappointment, to Mark Dotys beautiful invitation to follow the expansive, formative energy of desire. So: Write the story of a longing whose unfulfillment has fed or continues to expand your soul.
