Im still processing this... I just heard that Jim Deva, co-founder of Little Sisters Book & Art Emporium, just passed away. Our LGBTQ community just lost one of our leaders. As I was singing with the Vancouver Mens Chorus during Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life | 2014 this morning, I thought about how lucky we are to live in this city where we are able to express who we are as human beings and that didnt come easy. Im thankful for the people who came before me who have been fighting hard in our LGBTQ community for the need of a community and I know Jim was one of those guys. Little Sisters Bookstore was the first place my Chosen Family took me when I came out. Little Sisters Vs. Big Brother was one of the first documentaries I saw. Climb The Stairs was the song that was commissioned and performed by the VMC and its a song about how, in the early days, a lot of young people climb that stairs to get to the bookstore and how it was a big part of their journey for self acceptance, and so was mine. Jim was an exuberant, loving, gentle, and caring human being. He was a Community leader. Without him, Vancouver wouldnt have an LGBTQ community the way we have it today. Thank you for all your wonderful work for our community. You will be sorely missed.
