Im still reading Whats so Amazing about Grace? I came across something this morning that really hit home with me. The word AS - Charles Williams has said of the Lords Prayer, No word in English carries a greater possibility of terror than the little word, as in that clause. What makes as so terrifying? The fact that Jesus plainly links our forgiven-ness by the Father with our forgiven-ness of fellow human beings. Jesus next remark cannot be more explicit: If you do not forgive others their wrongs, your Father will not forgive your wrongs. By denying Forgiveness to others, we are in effect determining them unworthy of Gods forgiveness, and thus so are we. In some mysterious way, divine forgiveness depends on us. Shakespeare put it succinctly in Merchant of Venice: How shalt thou hope for mercy, rendering none? (Philip Yancey - Whats so Amazing about Grace) So, when we step out by faith, we know that we do not have the strength to forgive and forget. Forgiveness does not mean we will forget, but Ive learned through experience that when I lean heavily on Gods mercy and grace - the memory will become less powerful and have less impact or effect on how I feel about the situation. As my ability to forgive through Christ becomes more powerful - it begins to over shadow that moment in time. All of this is made possible when my willingness to forgive takes its first step forward in faith, and allows Gods grace to work its perfect work in and through me.
