Im studying for a Trinity final tomorrow, and am reviewing the computer-generated English translation of the course notes. Its got some real head-scratchers, like this description of the Kingdom-era prophets: There and best known through the prophetic oracles, Which emphasize blackberries and more faith in a One God and transcendent, powerful, and full of mercy. I must have missed that part about blackberries. None of this competes with the Patriology notes, though. In Luke 24:39, the Resurrected Jesus shows His Wounds and Side to the Apostles. Heres how the translation renders that famous line: Well look at my hands and my feet: Im just me! Touch and see carefully: a spirit cannot have flesh and bones (a body real) as you can see I have, instead I. I enjoy how casual He sounds (Im just me!). A little later, when Pope Leo describes Jesus as both the Word and Flesh, the translation calls Him the verb and meat.* I suppose thats what happen when you read an automated English translation of an Italian translation of a Latin commentary on Greek Scriptures. *In Italian, there are two words for Word, parola and verbo, and verbo literally means verb.
