Im sure all my gluten-free posts induce eye rolling from those unaffected by gluten, but the way gluten is used in our society creates a real handicap for me (and 1 in 100 others) when it comes to enjoying some of lifes simple pleasures or basic needs: dinners out, birthday parties, weddings, traveling, beauty services, and medical or dental care. It takes an astronomical amount of time and energy to constantly read labels and search for things in tiny print like tocopherol and hydrolized wheat protein. Its in everything! Flavorings, sauces, marinades, processed food, bottled beverages, condiments, some Keurig pods, spices, beauty products or in salons or spas, sunscreens, hand sanitizer, medications, toothpaste and polishes, medical tapes and casting materials, envelopes, balloons, and the list goes on, and on....and on! Even a real and basic food like Jennie-O turkey adds a natural flavor to their ground meat that glutens it. Ive learned all this through personal experiments and many ending in very unpleasant results. Calling ahead to check if products, goods and foods are GF is often met with replies of uncertainty and therefore unsafety. Im a planner by nature, but this requirement makes things extreme...and sometimes very, very uncomfortable physically and socially. Its maddening sometimes and just life other times. So, at this point, I fancy myself a bit of a gluten-free guru now that Im nearly 3 1/2 years gluten free. Much to my dismay, Im always discovering new sources of gluten even though I attempt with 100% to steer clear of it. Sometimes I land upon pleasant surprises that really allow to me relax and enjoy, or at least relax and experience without fretting over getting glutened and then paying the price for days afterward. Its no wonder when I discover a place like Ma Jolie Salon with a manager who confidently boasts about her GF hair care and make-up line, I really think its no question that I make that my new go-to for hair and more...even though Ive been going to the same gal at Salon X since 1999 and really dont relish a break-up with my awesome stylist, Jen. The reality, though, is that the products at Salon X often leave me feeling very less than awesome when I leave, and its a frustrating scenario to pay good money for nice color or a cute cut only to have to go home and feel sick. Heres a list of some of my new GF favs: Hair care--Surface and Bamboo Toothpaste--Jason Self-tanner--South Seas Make-up--Red Apple, Mirabella Hair Salon in SR--Ma Jolie Bakery--Miglets Lotion--Desert Organics Tylenol--CVS brand w/ GF on label Digestive enzymes--Gluten Ease Restaurant--Pica Pica
