Im sure there are others skirmishes when government forces have suffered many casualties from the hands of the rebels, especially in the 1970s and the 1980s. I remember reading when I was still young stories of these firefights including one which is how an NPA ambush in Cagayan led to the death of more than a dozen Scout Rangers . But, I think this is the largest number of casualties that a special forces unit of the AFP has ever suffered in a single encounter and I cannot help myself but ask why. The SAF has one of the best trained men in the AFP. It is also said that the unit involved in the said encounter was US trained. Also, the news item I was reading said the battle started at around 11 p.m. last Sunday. I wonder at around what time did the government forces suffer the most number of fatalities because if this happened well into the battle, how come the SAF unit involved has not yet gotten air support and reinforcements? This is a sad day indeed, not just for the PNP, the AFP and the families of the soldiers (and the rebels) who died, but for the whole country as well.
