Im sure we all heard about the news of the #ParisShooting and those killed from the #CharlieHebdo office. I wasnt going to comment on this incident, but since there is a lot of confusion, misunderstanding, and speculating going on, I will just raise a few points of concern WITHOUT MENTIONING MY PERSONAL OPINION on what happened. The concerning issues to be raised are as follows: 1- No individual or organization has claimed responsibility of the attack as to this moment, so everything going around is either speculation, accusation, or police investigation. 2- Allegedly, witnesses claim that the gunmen specifically mentioned that they were from Al Qaidah. I find this surprising as this was never the style of other operations carried out by Al Qaidah, where responsibility would be claimed afterwards by an official statement. This sounds very amateur, and could be the work of someone or some organization/government who for other agendas. 3- The media mentioned that this was the worst terrorist attack in Europe since 2005. They lied. This is not the case. They forgot, or deliberately left out the killing of more than 67 people and the bombing of several government buildings by Anders Breivik in Norway in 2011. Of course, when looking closer we know why they didnt mention this: The perpetrator back then wasnt a Muslim, so his crime isnt considered terrorism. As usual, the media fuelling the fire of Islamophobia. 4- The hypocrisy of the West when it comes to Freedom of speech. The acts and drawings of these cartoonists are being defended under the excuse of Freedom of speech. People are saying that no one should find drawings or writings as offensive or insulting. Yet, we see Muslims arrested for drawings, books, and writings found at their homes. Just 2 weeks ago a brother was arrested here in Sydney for a few papers that were found at his house. Allegedly, these papers had some writing (a few incomplete sentences) on them, and yet the brother was arrested and is now under trial for terrorism charges. We also are all aware of the individual who used to run the @ShamiWitness account, and how he was arrested and charged with terrorism offences. Why is it that Freedom of speech only applies to non Muslims, while Muslims are accounted for what they say, draw and write? There is now a hashtag on twitter #KillAllMuslims and no one is being arrested or charged for that, neither is it gaining any media attention. What if it were Muslims using a different hashtag and encouraging the killing of followers of other religions? What would the response be then? 5- When you provoke an enormous number of people, or degrade the followers of a religion by insulting something or someone they hold sacred, dont expect to be left alone. This goes for everyone: Muslims and others. The cartoonists in #CharlieHebdo had made it a habit of insulting our Prophet -peace be upon him-. They were warned and even threatened more than once. On one occasion, their premises was fire-bombed, yet they forbade to learn a lesson. Im not condoning what happened, but Im just stating that there must be a line/limit for freedom of speech, and when people or religions are being affected, the boundaries shouldnt be crossed. I pray that all violence comes to an end, and people are kept safe and sound.
