Im thinking about another anniversary today. 25 years ago today, Tropical Depression Twelve grew more organized, prompting the National Hurricane Center to upgrade it to Tropical Storm Hugo. It would be a full week before it hit St. Croix, but it would level the place, damaging 90% of the buildings here and destroying the infrastructure so badly that electricity was not to be had on the island for 3-6 months. Hugo is still the second most severe US landfalling Atlantic hurricane, surpassing even Katrina. There are still signs of this damage today, and no one who lived here then will every forget. It changed this island forever. I did not live here in 1989. I lived in New York City. On September 11, 1989, I was sitting in my office on the 31st floor of World Trade Center 1, talking to my co-worker who was born on St. Thomas and was concerned about her father who still lived there. Irony.
