Im thinking of trying an experiment for a month, or maybe a year: no formal or informal discussion of gender issues in groups that do not include men. I realize that women sometimes need to compare experiences in private groups. But women-only discussions have limits and drawbacks: Men can feel excluded or jump to the worst possible conclusions about what’s being said. Without fresh, frank contributions from men, the conversations are more likely to have a circular quality, eventually leading to exhaustion and cynicism. And it’s somewhere between useless and wrong to complain about male behavior without ever giving the men in question even the gentlest feedback. Is this worth trying? Any advice, Lydia Polgreen, Emily Bazelon, Adaora Udoji, Binta Niambi Brown, amanda hess, Rob Reich, Eli Pariser, Richard Perez-Pena? Anyone else want to try this with me? To this point: the freshest, most memorable analysis Ive read of the UC shootings and the #yesallwomen phenomenon was written by a man. #gendermeanseveryone
