Im very confident that my great-great-grandfather, George - TopicsExpress

Im very confident that my great-great-grandfather, George Porte(o)us, came from the village of Elvington just outside York, England. I also know from DNA testing that I have an ancestor in common with a Michigan native. With help from that Michigan persons father, I am fairly certain that he is descended from John Porthouse and Sarah Marsden, who were married 26 Dec 1763 in Mirfield, Yorkshire. Marsden Porteous, who emigrated from the area to Canada (and eventually Michigan), seems to have lived in Lastingham, Yorkshire. My grandfathers youngest uncle, Robert Sidney Porteous, was born in Ontario, Canada in the early 1860s. One of his children was named Margaret Annis Porteous. While looking through the Ontario Genealogical Society Provincial Index, I came across a marriage between a Rachel Porteous and a James Annis. Further, it seems that Rachel may very well have been born in Lastingham and christened there on 29 June 1837. Her parents are identified as John Porteous and Betty. Pat, or anyone else in our group: Do you have any details about the Lastingham, Yorkshire Porteous branch before I look any deeper?
