Im very inclined to agree with him - and that surprises me: hes a dyed in the wool Liberal. Id prefer, however, that his PM cease to sabre rattle, and take his lead from other, calmer leaders. Colonel Blimp never did his cause much good, either! Rhetoric is all well and good - but the kind were hearing at the moment serves mostly to inflame the already puffy red necks of some sectors of the populace, and alienate those who disagree, or possibly dont recognise a threat. That said, I have to note that theres an element of patronisng complacency in the assumption that Islamic militancy and fanaticism pose no real threat to the West; that can really only derive from the complaceny of people convinced that their culture, strategic position, and overall fire-power is inherently superior to the rabble opposing them. And yet - the USA did not win in Afghanistan or Iraq - had they done so, we would not now be having this discussion. Conciliatory gestures to monsters has been shown by history to do nothing but encourage the monsters. And the behaviour of all our leaders in the West demonstrates that they dont take the threat of fanaticism and religious fundamentalism seriously enough to see it as a real threat to civilisation - despite the clear evidence of the past.
