Im very interested to see and hear the comments made by Fraser - TopicsExpress

Im very interested to see and hear the comments made by Fraser Cluness below, who clearly has a significant personal axe to grind for whatever reason, probably best known to himself. Im assuming however his comments are of a general nature and his tirade aimed at Shetland Arts and its staff in general. That, of course, is very much his prerogative. However when his also directs that tirade - rubish is a word he employs at one point - toward the many artists (presumably including musicians of a local, national and international status too) who have passed through the doors of the facility since it opened then his opinion of course goes much wider. It presumably also takes in all the private promoters who also add to the overall Mareel artistic programme into the bargain. We all know how easy it is to pass personal opinion and criticism in the manner Fraser chooses to do here. It is, however, much more challenging to additionally offer up something more constructive as an alternative to what he / they see as the venues failings - especially in terms of its programme. He says he hopes the quality of the same kind of music we are served up might improve. I note the term we in this context - so presumably Fraser is also acting as a spokesperson for others. So why not stand up and genuinely be counted Fraser? Seeing has how youve offered your initial opinion on this in public can you also indicate how you - or those you appear to seek to represent - would put together an alternative to fit your needs and for Shetland Arts (and others) to spend their money more wisely in future. Some detail of what you personally think would work instead would be of interest to many of us Im sure - especially in terms of Shetland Arts effetively acting on public opinion as you say. Detailed enlightenment on such issues is always more than welcome rest assured. Of course the other alternative is to actually do something about it yourself. I can think of at least four private promoters - mostly involved the the area of music - who do local gigs off their own backs including ones in Mareel. Why not join them and put on gigs of your own that you believe would fit the bill you only vaguely outline below and bring the kind of artist and programme to Mareel and Shetland that you believe it actually needs? Im sure if indeed Shetland Arts are currently getting it wrong, and you believe whatever alternative programme structure you (we) personally have in mind would work better instead - especially one that would presumably wash it face and, as such, not waste any more public money - then it would be good to hear details of this at the earliest opportunity.
