Im watching another year tick by, still not understanding the emphasis we put on carving up the calender to note our inexorable spiral towards death. Ive always believed that our obsession with segmenting time down to the second has a tendency to age us prematurely. And dont get me started on those silly and rarely successful New Years resolutions. The fact that we wait until the new year only condemns the resolution to failure. Its much like quitting smoking AFTER you finish the last carton of smokes or starting a diet AFTER I finish all this bad food in the pantry so it doesnt go to waste. I dont know; maybe I should start drinking. Im half convinced that the only reason we mark events is to keep the distilleries in business. Why else would Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
