Im watching the Al Jazeera report on wildlife declines of 52% in the last 40 years. These data blur the picture wildlife numbers are increasing in most western countries, and declining in developing countries. For Kenya the picture is very bad. Dr. Joseph Ogutu analysed long term data for in Kajiado county of Kenya and found that between 1977 and 2011 15 species of wildlife declined by 67%. Livestock numbers also decreased - so its not competition, its land degradation that is destroying productivity. This is a stark example of how we are destroying our natural capital or natural wealth. Kenya is poorer due to poor enforcement, policies and regulations. We see that people in Kajiado are generally getting poorer and poorer. One devastating effect of degradation destruction of resilience to climate change. Our findings point to recurrent droughts, intensifying human population pressures, land use changes and other anthropogenic impacts, decades of ineffective or failed government policies, legislations, law enforcement, management institutions and strategies as the salient causes of the declines and range compressions. We recommend several urgent measures to rehabilitate the depleted wildlife populations and habitat richness, restore their ecological resilience to droughts and secure pastoral livelihoods. clippings.ilri.org/2014/08/28/wildlife-populations-are-declining-dramatically-in-kenyas-kajiado-county/
