Im well aware how controversial this post will come across...and my educated guess is that Ill be in the vast minority here. But Im going to put it out here anyhow, because Ive some extremely powerful feelings about this whole issue. First off, I am sick to death of Oprah. Dont misunderstand - I used to watch her religiously and loved what she stood for. But the old saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely appears to hold true in her case, as well. She just released her annual list of her Favorite Things...most of which the average American cant even come close to affording. Included in that list was a book she wrote - a shameless plug, in my humble opinion. Second, while she has every right to spend all those millions upon millions of dollars that come in each year in any way she chooses, it was AMERICANS who launched her career & shot her to the top of the 1% of the richest people in the world. Its wonderful that she showers a great deal of money on her African children...but would it hurt to pour some of those much needed dollars into our own children in this country who suffer from hunger & mal-nourishment? Lastly, Im with this young woman. While its important to recognize our roots, this continual divisiveness of labeling ourselves as separate only serves to feed the hatred & division between the races/cultures. Ive felt this within my own family...and it only causes hurt, anger & confusion for those of us who arent included.
