Im willing to bet there are quite a number of you who have made the short drive west from 395 up Convict Road to the lake of the same name. Due to the massive scale of earth moved by glacial action, it would be (almost, and probably) impossible to recognize the fact that you were driving over and across what is known as glacial moraines. In other words; the big giant piles of dirt and rocks that a wall of ice pushed out of the canyon as it advanced and retreated over the episodes of the last ice age. With the magic of Google earth the signs of glacial activity along the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada become plain to see. U.S. 395 crosses along the bottom of the image north to south, and you can see the blue jewel of Convict Lake sitting in its glacially-carved bowl.
