Im working late tonight. Its kind of funny, because every time I work late, I inevitably find myself thinking about something else. I was listening to a random mix of music and the song It Is Well with My Soul began playing. It has always been a favorite hymn of mine not only because of the words, which are powerful, but because of the story behind the song. The man who wrote the song/poem was a lawyer named Horatio Spafford. In 1870, his son died of scarlet fever at the age of 4. In 1871 the Great Chicago fire took a series of building in which he had invested. In 1873, his wife and four daughters were on a trip to England across the Atlantic when a collision between the ship they were on and another ship resulted in the death of all four of his daughters. Upon receiving a telegram from his wife, who survived, Spafford boarded a ship to England. On the way, passing over the accident site, Spafford wrote the words to It Is Well with My Soul. In the face of that tragedy and those which had preceded it, the richness of Spaffords faith is evident. No matter the circumstances, nothing can rob us the eternal inheritance paid for on the cross. Three months ago, Brent Warr, sang this song at my sisters funeral. We then took an urn with her earthly remains, placed it in a box and buried it. While life goes on around us, there are days when it feels like time is standing still. There are days when the wound is fresh and deep. There are days of anger and confusion. Even so, I am thankful for this opportunity God has given me. For the blessings He has bestowed on all of us. For the gift of His son that makes it well with my soul.
