Im working my way through Tom Wrights For Everyone commentaries on the books of the New Testament in my daily devotions, and today I reached Pauls famous speech at the Areopagus. Wright reckons Paul was like a grandmaster playing simultaneous chess with several opponents - Epicureanism, Stoicism and the Athenian Philosophical Academy. Far be it from me to compare little Manali with ancient Athens as a centre of learning and philosophy, but it strikes me that in this town several worldviews exist side by side - Hinduism is dominant, Buddhism is also prominent, western humanism is also influential, and the occasional Muslim reminds me that that system is totally dominant only some valleys away. In the midst of this is a vigorous little Christian community. But heres an interesting exercise: using Lukes Paul at the Areopagus as a model, how would we play simultaneous chess with the various other worldviews of our particular contexts?
