Imagination is a flame that ignites the creative spirit. Wilferd A. Peterson Our world needs a spark, a light, a fire of positivity to make it sustainable. Passionate young artists willing to push the boundaries of what is known and what is comfortable with their creativity can change the world. Colabo Youth Dance Collective is making a START. Founded by artistic director Francisco Gella and educator Jeffrey Hoffman in Fall 2012, Colabo first debuted to a sold-out audience as part of Executive Producer Jamie Nichols Celebrate Dance concert on March 9, 2013 at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA. After outstanding reviews as the only pre-professional company invited to perform at Celebrate Dance and summer performances at the Interstate Movement Dance Festival, the Collective presents its first Colabo-only show with award-winning guest choreographers. The upcoming concert on December 14 features a solo performance by Colabo artistic director Francisco Gella, as well as the premier of new commissions by Gella, Colabo associate artistic director and UCI faculty Saleemah Knight, Clairobscur artistic director Laurie Sefton, choreographer and member of LA Contemporary Dance Company Andrew Pearson, and choreographer and ballet educator Julie Shulman Friedrich. As a fresh new project in Los Angeles, Colabo is made up of nearly 30 talented youth. The Collectives purpose is to inspire, to motivate, to create, to impact. As an emerging community of passionate young dancers from Southern California communities, the collective provides a creative platform to perform, to learn new styles, and to develop personal voice. As these aspiring young artists are preparing for their own future, they are also influencing the future of dance, and just as importantly, the world itself as citizens of the global community. Colabo is a safe place for artists to begin that journey.
