Imagine U-boats prowling the East Coast in the dead of night, the fires from torpedoed cargo ships visible from shore. Sound like fiction? Its not! The National Geographic Channel brings this hidden battlefield of World War II to life in the documentary “Hitler’s Secret Attack on America,” screened this Wednesday, July 23 at 7:00 pm at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. The screening also will include a question and answer period with the projects lead scientist, Joe Hoyt, Maritime Archaeologist for the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. The film follows NOAA researchers as they piece together this devastating 1942 assault by German submarines on American shipping, which claimed more than 200 vessels and 2,000 lives.
