Imagine a scenario where a baby is born at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. The mother is an inmate. she has no relatives or visits and she therefore has got no clothes or blanket to cover her newborn baby. The little thing goes back to prison wrapped in a Correctional Officers jacket. One of the benefits of my work is that I get to meet many South Africans who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others, very often with little support. Yesterday I met with one such person, Boitumelo Makobe. she used her time in prison as a turning point in her life. Not only did she come out with a B Ed, she is a teacher at her local school and together with her friend, she runs a Saturday school programme giving extra lessons for learners who are struggling with Maths, Technology and English. As a mother who raised a baby in prison, her passion is to give love to babies who are serving time with their mothers in prison. I would like to make a call to those of you who are so moved, to adopt a baby in prison.
