Imagine the society we would be living in today if, on this day in 1788, instead of seeking to dominate and control this land, its people and its resources, the British had come to learn and share with the first Peoples of Australia. Imagine a truly fair society not weighed down by the shameful legacy of prejudice and segregation. Imagine a society where our political and legal institutions had always reflected our true diversity, going back to the drafting of the Constitution. A society which combines traditional Indigenous knowledge with the latest technology and innovation from around the world. A society in which multiculturalism is not feared as a radical concept because it is home to over 200 different language groups which have coexisted for millenia. A society where every citizen, no matter where they came from or how they got here, is unified by a knowledge of the history of the land they are standing on, going back thousands of years. Those first Europeans had guns, germs and steel but lacked the vision to see the true potential of Australia. As a consequence there some wounds which need to be healed first but we can still create that country together. We can be an example to the world. We cant change the past but the story is still being written and we are holding the pen. Lets make the next chapter one we will be proud to read to our children one day.
