Imagine there were a subculture who made up about 10-15% of the general population. This sub-group is virtually absent from the prison system, comprising only 0.07%, indicating a high degree moral philosophy and upstanding behavior. Meanwhile, this same group comprises 41% of all scientists, and 93% of the elite National Academy of Sciences. No reasonable person would question it: this would be a group worthy of emulation. This subculture has figured something out the rest of us havent. They should be regarded as role models. A massive cultural change and shift in their direction would improve the world, and should be embraced by all. Their numbers should expand. They ought to be the dominant guiding force in society, occupying everything from reality TV shows to the highest political offices. Instead, the general population hates this minority. Polls indicate that they are the most hated and distrusted minority group. These people are fired from their jobs and rejected by their families if anyone finds out. The young are abused, forced to attend reeducation, and threatened with torture. This group is not hypothetical. Ive just described the status of atheists in America. The most exceptional intellectual and moral demographic that has ever existed in the history of the world is hated, distrusted, and oppressed by a majority that believes in talking animals, magical plagues, demonic possession, demigod zombie saviors, and other bronze age mythological non-sense. We are hated because we challenge the sheer stupidity of these precious beliefs, and shine the bright light of reason into these dark and comically ridiculous corners of the religious mind.
