Imam Ash-Shafi^e may Allāh raise his rank was once in Egypt and his student Imam Ahmed was in Iraq. Imam Ash-shafi^e saw a dream and the next morning when he woke up he wrote what had happened in his dream on a letter and gave it to one of his students to go to Iraq so that he can give it to Imaam Ahmed. When his student did that, Imam Ahmed read that letter and it was informing him of a dream that Imam Ash-shafi^e saw and in his dream he saw the prophet peace be upon him telling him to give the news to Imam Ahmed that he will face a great trial, but tell him to be patient because the reward of his patience is paradise. The ruler at the time was influenced by the mu^tazila (people who deviated by denying the attributes of Allāh and used to say false expressions like, the Quran is created). Imam Ahmed was upon the same conviction as the prophet peace be upon him and that is that Allāhs eternal speech is unlike the speech of the creations. It is not a combination of letters, sounds and languages. Therefore it is not created. The Quran is an expression of Allāhs eternal Kalam, but when you listen to its recitation youre not listening to the actual Kalam of Allāh. Because the mu^tazila said, the Quran is created.Imam Ahmed opposed them because it is impermissible to say such a statement, they meant by that statement that Allāh is NOT attributed with speech, hence whenever the attribute of Allāh Al-Kalam is mentioned its referring to a creation ( sick people). So because Imam Ahmed opposed the mu^tazila the ruler imprisoned this great Imaam and assigned 150 people to whip him day and night. But he remained patient and stayed steadfast to the creed of Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama^ah.
