Imam Sunni ulama (ulema) usually work within a tradition (madhhab) that starts with one of five classic jurists. 1. Shafii (most common in Indonesia, Somalia, Malaysia, Jordan, Palestine and Egypt) 2. Hanafi (most common in Turkey, the Balkans, Central Asia, Indian subcontinent, Afghanistan, Egypt) 3. Maliki (most common in North Africa, West Africa,) 4. Hanbali (most common in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar and several other Persian Gulf states, as well as parts of the Indian subcontinent) 5. Zahiri (followed by minority communities in Morocco and Pakistan. In the past, adherents were found in Mesopotamia, Portugal, the Balearic Islands, North Africa and parts of Spain.)
