Imani said something to me earlier today that made my heart sink. I may be slightly misquoting her but essentially she said Why are all the black stories bad stories? I thought it was a reaction to the painful images we saw at the African American Museum in Philadelphia but I sense this is something she has been ruminating over for some time. So over dinner I followed up on her question asking what she meant. She then said Theres just just a lot more white books and movies than black ones and their movies are about all different things. Like there arent any black stories like the Boxcar Children. So I asked my eight year old what kind of black stories would she like to read and see and she said Ones that I write. And so Im buying her another composition book to fill with more of her own stories.
