Immigration reform might not be dead after all…Most analysts - TopicsExpress

Immigration reform might not be dead after all…Most analysts doubted that immigration reform would be brought up this year, because nobody wanted to touch that hot potato in an election year. But not so fast. President Obama just pulled a 180. He’d been demanding a quick path to citizenship for about 11 million illegal immigrants. But he suddenly shifted gears and told CNN that he might be willing to compromise with Republicans to grant these people legal status to be in the US, but not full citizenship, at least not right away. So immigration reform might be back on the front burner after all. But Latino leaders want that path to citizenship; they vote heavily Democratic, and they’re not likely to be happy with any compromise. And Republican voters don’t see why law-breakers should be rewarded. Plus, they want the border sealed first. I have a feeling this will stay on the front burner only until incumbents discover just how badly it’s going to burn them.
