Immunisation clinic in the Long Haus Last week we took a 5 hour - TopicsExpress

Immunisation clinic in the Long Haus Last week we took a 5 hour boat trip up into the remote villages of Epegau and Titihui in East Kikori to immunise babies and treat the sick. It had been many months since the last government immunisation patrol and the nearest health centre at Karauti takes half a day to paddle to. Every child in the village was behind on their immunisations - there were even some who had never been immunised before even though they were approaching their first birthdays. Titihui had an outbreak of bacterial conjunctivitis and every child had watering eyes filled with pus. Despite this the people were wonderfully happy. They showed their appreciation by bringing coconuts and helped to carry our heavy patrol boxes. They swept out an old classroom for us to sleep in and decorated it with palm fronds. They cooked us sago for dinner that night and breakfast and lunch the next day. I love my country, with all my heart. From 1975 til infinity. Long Live Papua New Guinea. ( Dr Patrick Koliwan)
