Upon assumption of office in 2007, Ikedi Ohakim met on ground A state capital with serious environmental challenges with a suffocating odor from long abandoned refuse dumps with the attendant health implications. Owerri capital city was defaced with shanties and overtaken by filthy with numerous dump sites that took over the roads. Chief Dr Ikedi ohakim who strongly believed in words of the Marthin Luther Jr. ‘there comes a time one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because his conscience tells him it is right’. Ikedi ohakim took the bull by the horn, kick start rapid urban renewal programme tagged the CLEAN AND GRREN INITIATVE under the NEW FACE OF IMO PROJECT with aim of reclaiming and renewing IMO STATE from environmental decay so that the state can wore attractive and adorable look again. In the course of executing this programmes some startling discoveries were made:arms were recovered from some of the shanties destroyed, over TWO TIPPER LOADS OF RATS AND OVER FIVE HUNDRED TIPPERS LOADS OF REFUSE were carted away from the major streets in owerri capital territory alone. It was unbelievable. This urban renewal programme had embedded, sanitation, road reconstruction, GREENING, displaying of market wares on the roads, creation of pedestrian walk ways, relocation of motor parks, proper drainage management and organized transport system. This initiative of chief Ikedi Ohakim government created more than six thousand five hundred (6500) jobs directly across the state and reduced crime arising from the criminal activities that were hosted by the destroyed shanties. Sanitation awarenees advocacy was carried to schools, rural communities and churches and people willingly enlisted in the vanguard to promote clean and green across the state. Imo state became the destination of choice for people and organization hosting conferences, seminar, Annual General Meetings, work shops and capacity building programmes. Hospitality industry operators in the state would testify that they enjoyed huge business boom within the period while event managers smiled to the bank because there was no dull moment. The success recorded in recovering the urban areas in the state reverberated across the country leading to the federal ministry of environment adjudging imo state the cleanest in the country. Investment friendly rating of the state rose commendably and indices pointed to the fact that the state would before long realize one of its main objective of building a private sector driven economy with the multiplier effect on job creation, improvement in internally generated revenue(IGR) taking away idle youths from crime.
