Imperatives for Elections 2015 in SVG: Well things really seem - TopicsExpress

Imperatives for Elections 2015 in SVG: Well things really seem to be heating-up in that beautiful lil place I call home. Sir Ivan and his Green Machine had the city locked with their entertaining rhetoric, even inspiring the Yellow Machines declaration of their cast of Actors. Then all-of-a-sudden, like an unpredicted winter, Silly-Season kicked in, and as anyone familiar with the tale of this Vincy third party political scenario would expect, the Green Machine was quickly relegated to its comfort zone - where no amount of election-to-election campaign machinery can prove its relevance. Thats right! Silly Season in SVG is officially here!!! But enough with the entertainment anyways. Serious times call for serious people. With general elections constitutionally due in about 16 months, it is my guess that the actions and behaviours of these politicians are likely to quickly become increasingly more irrational and counterproductive. In fact, such may actually be understatements of what we can expect. Unfortunately, the same can be said of thousands of my fellow countrymen and women who have traditionally followed the politics blindly. The Yellow Machine has already publicly declared that they would not be cooperating with the Government [and its Red Machine] From here on... (iwnsvg, 2014) - not that there was ever really any cooperation anyways, so please do not be fooled. But truth be told my Vincy bredrens and sistrens, this does not look very promising for us at all. Some of us have already conceded - stating that this is the nature of our politics, and that there is very little to nothing that we can do about it. We have settled for this type of politics simply because we enjoy it!!! We enjoy the drama and entertainment of backwardness and confusion disguised as competitive politics. So heres what: How about we start calling-out our politicians? RED, YELLOW, GREEN - were holding every-man-Jack to the same standards. No free rides to the Parliament of St. Vincent & the Grenadines. It is time for us to redefine competitive politics. So here is my short-list of imperatives for ELECTIONS 2015. Feel free to add to the list. Imperatives for Elections 2015: (1) National debates (Between all candidates within all constituencies) on key contemporary issues of national development (we do not care about who dragged whose sheep where, or who was an excellent public servant 40 years ago - we need to know your merit NOW); (2) Declarations on the official sources of campaign funding (We do not want/ need drug lords, money launderers, nor high-profile thieves influencing the decisions of our parliamentarians); (3) Absolute freedom of the press (No media entity should feel threatened for honestly and objectively covering a campaign-related story); (4) Special training for mass media professionals (journalists, reporters, etc.) facilitated through the OECS/ CARICOM/ OAS Secretariats - thus facilitating the most comprehensive and objective elections coverage possible; and (5) Advanced clarifications and agreement (by all political parties) on matters related to the Voters List (This issue should be addressed in advance and in a manner that ensures that the voting public is not distracted by deliberate attempts by any political party/ entity to achieve such). Feel free to add to the list...
